Alpac Elementary School Language Arts Specialist Barb Hagedorn will host a reading fluency night for first and second grade Title I students and their parents at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Alpac Elementary School Library, 310 Milwaukee Blvd. N., Pacific.
Funded by a $3,000 Target Literacy Grant, the reading fluency night will show parents how to help their children increase their fluency skills through home-based activities that supplement the students’ school-day learning.
Parents and students will rotate through three stations that target various literacy skills including: fluency, phonics and vocabulary. A language arts specialist paraeducator will model how to work on each skill at home.
The grant also will fund a before-school reading club for third and fourth grade students beginning in January. Students will work on reading fluency and test-taking strategies for the new Measurement of Student Progress (MSP), which replaces the Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL) beginning in the 2009-10 school year.
