For the Reporter

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers begin repair work next week on the Dykstra Levee damaged during the 2014 floods.

The levee protects people and property in Auburn and in unincorporated King County from flooding during storms and high river levels.

The Corps project is part of its Continuing Authorities Program under Public Law 84-99. The King County Flood Control District, the local sponsor for the project, is contributing an estimated $360,000 toward the total project cost of approximately $1.8 million.

The levee is on the left bank of the Green River in the City of Auburn. Its upstream end is at 12th Street Northeast, from which it runs along the riverbank 1.1 miles, through Dykstra Park, roughly to 24th St.t NE.

The project addresses damages in three separate locations, totaling approximately 850 feet of damage along the Green River:

• Site 1 is immediately upstream of Dykstra Park;

• Site 2 is upstream of 22nd Street Northeast as far as 19th Drive Northeast; and

• Site 3 is in the 1600 block of Riverview Drive Northeast, roughly where V Street Northeast would meet the river, if it was extended south.

The project schedule for the project is as follows:

• Late July – Mobilization and site preparation

• August – In-water construction (Seeking approval to extend in-water work into early September)

• September – Site restoration

Residents in the area can expect to see an increase in construction vehicles and increased noise throughout the levee easement area during this time. Access and use to portions of Dykstra Park will also be limited during this time.
