Glass artist Jeff Crandall believes in a world of happiness. So much so, that he will be giving away 144 of his “Happiness” Poet’s Bottles during the City of Auburn’s Artrageous: Art Festival and Farmer’s Market.
The Aug. 4-5 event is free and open to the public.
The fourth annual community celebration – which runs from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 4 – shifts from Les Gove Park to downtown Auburn and the City Hall Plaza, adding entertainment for all ages.
The festival continues from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 5 in conjunction with the Auburn International Farmers Market at the Auburn Sound Transit Plaza, 23 A St. SW.
Crandall combines his original poetic text with sandblasted glass to create artworks that reflect on human fragility, transparency and containerization.
Crandall’s project, titled “Two Days of Happiness” and sponsored by the City of Auburn and 4Culture Site Specific, presents an interactive sculptural installation comprised of 72 corked and empty wine bottles sandblasted with: Happiness and a list of ingredients: “Contains delight, smiles, joy, easy laughter and pure fun. Light humor added to preserve freshness.”
Crandall’s vision is a unique one: a public art project wherein members of the public actually get to take home a piece of art. Two Days of Happiness will provide the general public with a reminder that, in these dark times of economic despair, happiness is important.
The bottles will be displayed outdoors on a low riser. Throughout the day, individuals can take a bottle of “Happiness,” encouraging them to accept happiness freely and to allow happiness to come into their lives and homes.
The 72 bottles will be replaced on day two, repeating the experience.
A one-page handout will feature a simple artist statement.
The total value of the artwork is $10,080.
