Auburn competitors take top honors at Puyallup Fair

Auburn's Sonja St. John captured first place for tatting in the “Fastest Fingers in the West” contest held at the Puyallup Fair.

Auburn’s Sonja St. John captured first place for tatting in the “Fastest Fingers in the West” contest held at the Puyallup Fair.

Contestants dueled to complete the largest number of correct stitches in a 15-minute period in three classes: tatting, knitting, and crocheted granny squares.

Winners in each class received a $30 cash prize and a rosette. Second-place finishers won $20 and a rosette and third-place finishers won $10 and a rosette.

The winners of the quick draw are as follows:

Tatting

First – Sonja St. John, Auburn

Second – Yvonne Chisa, Spanaway

Third – Kathi Johnson, Port Townsend

Knitting

First – Ursula Bell, Kent

Second – Sonja St. John, Auburn

Third – Yvonne Chisa, Spanaway

Crocheting

First – Ursula Bell, Kent

Second – Yvonne Chisa, Spanaway

Third – Heather Haider, Edmonds

• Auburn’s Sarah Martin took top honors in Cat Fit & Show (seniors, ninth grade to 18 years of age) at the Puyallup Fair on Sunday.

• Auburn’s Pearl Plant Dolls was grand champion in the dolls division in the Fair’s Hobby Hall Awards.

Other area champions included Auburn’s Austin Coleman (Lego 15 & under division) and Pacific’s Richard Laplante (woodcarving division).
