The City of Auburn will introduce a citywide reading initiative, Auburn Reads, which will run from May to September.

The program is a joint partnership among the Auburn Public Library, Auburn International Farmers Market and Readers to Eaters, an organization that promotes food literacy.

Starting May 13, residents will read one book, the New York Times best-selling “Omnivore’s Dilemma” and its children’s edition, “Omnivore’s Dilemma for Kids”, written by Michael Pollan.

Everyone in Auburn is encouraged to read this book and share their thoughts at discussion groups held at the farmers market and public library.

In addition, there will be nutrition and gardening workshops, film showings, cooking demonstrations and related events to increase the community’s understanding of what we eat while highlighting Auburn’s rich farm history.

The official Auburn Reads launch event will be 6-8 p.m. Thursday, May 13, at the public library, located at 1102 Auburn Way S. It is open to the public. Copies of the “Omnivore’s Dilemma” will be available for checkout or purchase.

“Auburn Reads is a great way to celebrate the city’s rich food history and sources, from local farmers to school nutrition program,” said Lillie Brinker, farmers market manager. “The two books we selected will add to our understanding of where our food comes from for both children and their families.”

The Auburn International Farmers Market is scheduled to open for its second year on June 13. The market will feature more than 35 vendors offering a variety of fresh locally grown farmed based foods, hand-crafted items and concession stands that are restaurant based but feature a home-cooked taste.

The market will be open 10 a.m.-3 p.m. on Sundays, June 13 through Sept. 25, at the Auburn Station Plaza, off A Street Southwest.
