Christina Polyanko is an expert using a Microsoft program.

To date, she is the only high school student in the state of Washington to pass the Microsoft Office Specialist 2013 Word Expert part one and two exams, giving her industry certification at the expert level.

“The certifications in Office 2013 are project-based and require higher-level thinking skills,” said Auburn Mountainview business teacher Patty Eckelman. “This is a great achievement for Christina.”

Polyanko earned her Master Microsoft Office Specialist certification in Office 2010. She is now working on certifications in Office 2013. Her next test will be Excel Specialist and Expert of 2013.

During the last nine years, Auburn Mountainview has certified 26 Master Microsoft Office Specialists through the Microsoft Office Specialist courses, which provide students the opportunity to earn industry certifications.

To date, 629 staff and students have earned certifications in either Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, SharePoint and Access.

Auburn Mountainview’s Haylee Betts has been awarded a $3,000 presidential scholarship for the 2014-15 academic year at Eastern Washington University. The scholarship is awarded to high school seniors with a 3.8-plus cumulative GPA, a 1250-plus SAT or 28-plus ACT score. Betts was on the cheerleading and volleyball teams and participated in sports medicine. She is the daughter of Mark and Cheri Betts of Auburn. …

The state PTA recently recognized three students in this year’s cultural arts reflections competition. The theme was “Believe, Dream, Inspire.” The recipients were: Award of Merit in Intermediate Film, Aidan Dracass (third grade, Hazelwood Elementary); Award of Merit in Intermediate Literature, Cady Johnson (fifth grade, Ilalko Elementary); and Award of Merit in Intermediate Music Composition, Jenna Moon-Earle (third grade, Lakeland Hills Elementary). Students whose work advanced to the state level will be displayed at the annual PTA convention this spring. …

Auburn students and two teachers – Auburn High’s Tom Kaup and Auburn Mountainview’s Stephanie Keagle – took top awards at the Washington Journalism Education Association’s Spring Conference on March 15 at Shorewood High School. Kaup was named WJEA Adviser of the Year and will represent Washington in the national contest. Keagle won the experienced adviser scholarship, which gives her $750 to spend on workshops and other needs.

The following journalism students from Auburn also won awards: Cameron Fairchild, Auburn Riverside (superior in review writing. Only 19 of the 233 students entered in contests earned the rating); Alex Vasquez, Auburn Riverside (excellent in editorial writing); Mackenzie Brown, Auburn Riverside (excellent in feature writing); Justina Brown, Auburn High (honorable mention in copy editing/headline writing); Maddie Nassiran, Auburn Riverside (honorable mention in copy editing/headline writing); Sara Koenig, Auburn Riverside (honorable mention in newspaper/newsmagazine sports photos); Megan Carver, Auburn High (honorable mention in yearbook feature photo); and Lisa Cano, Auburn High (honorable mention in yearbook sports photo).
