An unmarked Auburn police car was burned to a crisp while officers were warning people to stop shooting off fireworks and clear out of an area on the Muckleshoot Reservation on the Fourth of July, it was disclosed Thursday.
Investigators are still trying to determine whether the officer driving the car ran over burning debris, or if it was hit directly by fireworks.
Auburn police were called to help assist the tribal police on shutting down the fireworks discharge area around 11 p.m. on the Muckleshoot Reservation late on July Fourth, Q13 reported.
Auburn police lined their cars up and drove through the area with their lights on and informing people through their PA systems to stop shooting off the fireworks and clear the area, Q13 reported.
At one point, one of the unmarked cars caught fire in the trunk, Q13 reported. It wasn’t known if the car drove over smouldering debris or if a firework was shot at the vehicle, police said.
The officer who was driving the Ford Taurus was not hurt.
