All 22 schools in the Auburn School District will participate in emergency evacuation drills beginning at 1 p.m. next Thursday, Oct. 14.

Two schools, Dick Scobee Elementary School and Cascade Middle School, will practice a walking evacuation drill in preparation for possible flooding in the Green River Valley. Both schools might be affected by flooding according to the flooding projection data compiled and mapped by the Army Corps of Engineers.

Students and staff from both schools will evacuate the schoolhouses and walk to a reunification site. School buses will transport the students and staff to a reunion location. Students will then be bused back to school.

All other schools in the district will be conducting earthquake evacuation drills.

Elsewhere

The Nick of Time Foundation will be at Auburn High School next Wednesday, Oct. 13, to provide free heart screenings to all interested students. The foundation will be joined by volunteering doctors and nurses from Auburn Regional Medical Center, Seattle Children’s Hospital, the University of Washington Medical Center and firefighters from the Valley Regional Fire Authority.

Heart screenings can reveal hidden heart conditions that are treatable if detected early. Surprisingly, a high school athlete dies every three days in the United States from Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) or a sudden heart attack, never having known they had a hidden heart condition.

Students will have the opportunity to detect hidden heart conditions and immediately receive information on next steps if necessary.

All students must make an appointment and receive parent permission to participate in the free heart screenings.
