Five months ago, King County prosecutors say, her westbound BMW crossed the center line of State Route 164 near Enumclaw and slammed into a pickup driven by 69-year-old Walter Frick of Enumclaw, killing him and severely injuring his 67-year-old wife, Colleen.
On Thursday morning, 56-year-old Valerie Bellack of Auburn stood before a Superior Court judge at the Maleng Regional Justice Center in Kent and pleaded not guilty to one count each of vehicular homicide and vehicular assault.
A case setting hearing is March 30 at the RJC.
Here is what happened, according to the Certification for Probable Cause, which the Washington State Patrol submitted to to the King County Prosecutor’s office.
Just after 11 o’clock on the rainy night of Nov. 7, 2015. Bellack was westbound on SR-164 in Enumclaw, doing 45 mph on a straight, clearly-marked part of the road, when, “for no discernible reason,” the report continues, she crossed the centerline and slammed into Frick’s eastbound pickup. Although Frick tried to veer to the right, the crash flipped his pickup over the guardrail. The vehicle landed on its side. Mr. Frick suffered catastrophic injuries and died during the crash. Colleen Frick, who was riding in the front passenger seat, suffered a lacerated spleen, fractured ribs and multiple arm fractures. She survived.
Responding emergency personnel told police that Bellack, who’d been seriously injured in the crash, smelled strongly of alcohol. She was rushed to Harborview Medical Center’s trauma unit. A legal blood draw taken just prior to her surgery showed a blood alcohol content of .079g per 100 ml.
Post treatment, she was able to return to her home, get around using a walker and attend physical therapy.
Bellack has no criminal history. She had a speeding citation deferred in 2001.
