Hannah McLaughlin, 16, served as a page in the Washington State Senate during the week of April 8.

Sen. Mona Das, D-Kent, sponsored McLaughlin’s week in the Legislature.

“It was so awesome to host Hannah at the Capitol this week,” said Das, who represents the 47th Legislative District. “I hope that she enjoyed her time with the Legislature and learned more about state government.”

The page program offers a hands-on opportunity for students to find out how state government works. The educational experience is furthered by guest speakers. It also includes classes with topics such as budget writing and how a bill becomes a law – which culminates in pages creating their own bills in a mock committee setting.

McLaughlin and her partners worked on a bill that would make school start times later. Their bill would help children get more sleep, and as a result have better health and work productivity. She has a great time watching her bill go through committee.

“I had a great time meeting new people and genuinely making friendships with other pages,” McLaughlin said. “I also am glad I got to see debates and bills on the floor.”

Pages also have the opportunity to work on the Senate floor. Their maroon coats and credentials allow them access to all parts of the Capitol Campus.

McLaughlin is a junior at Auburn High School. She is part of her high school’s cheer and water polo teams. She is also in leadership, theater, and is part of her school’s Associated Student Body.
