The 28th annual National Night Out (NNO), a unique crime/drug prevention event sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW), is Aug. 2. All neighborhoods are encouraged to be a part of Auburn’s Night Out 2011 team.

Residents in neighborhoods throughout the city of Auburn and across the nation are asked to lock their doors, turn on the outside lights and spend the evening outside with neighbors and police on Aug. 2.

Along with the traditional outside lights and front porch vigils, most cities and towns celebrate National Night Out with a variety of special citywide and neighborhood events such as block parties, cookouts, parades, festivals, visits from local officials and law enforcement, safety fairs and youth events.

To register your neighborhood or to inquire about further details, contact Duanna Richards at 253-931-3099 or drichards@auburnwa.gov.

If desired, a City representative can make an appearance at your event to talk to attendees about fighting crime in their area. Online registration is available at www.auburnwa.gov.

About National Night Out

National Night Out is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime programs; strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

NNO has proven to be an effective, inexpensive and enjoyable program to promote neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships in our fight for a safer nation. Plus, the benefits your community will derive from NNO will most certainly extend well beyond the one night.

NNO 2010 involved over 37 million people in 15,110 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities, and military bases worldwide. National Night Out 2011 is expected to be the largest ever. Once again this year Target is a national corporate sponsor.
