A girls team in the Auburn Youth Soccer Association needs away jerseys, warmups and soccer bags.
To raise money, the Stingrays will hold a silent auction-spaghetti feed later this month.
But coach Kris Strickland, assistant coach Jamie McDonald and the 11-and-under girls also are high as kites about using the proceeds to buy supplies to place into backpacks for some Auburn School District students who would otherwise go without.
“It will help our soccer money, and spaghetti is good stuff, yum!” said Anneka Murrin, 10, rubbing her stomach. “Also, it will help the schools!”
The feed/silent auction runs from 4 to 7 p.m., Aug. 22, on the second floor of the Truitt Building at 102 W. Main. The building’s owner, David Allen Davis, has donated the use of the room, and his Longhorn Barbecue will cater the event.
Tickets are $15 individually, $25 for two.
McDonald said the goal is to raise $5,000.
The backpack program is under the auspices of Communities in Schools of Auburn. In partnership with the Auburn Food Bank, CIS helps kids in critical need by providing backpacks filled with supplies, including food for elementary schools and middle schools.
“We came across the fact that we would like to do a fundraiser, and we were also looking for ways to get the school district some backpacks,” McDonald explained. “It costs more than $100 to buy supplies for your child to go to school. So I thought, what a great way to do a spaghetti feed fundraiser, let me see what I can do. And what better way to teach these girls to work hard and learn some leadership skills and to give back?”
“If kids don’t have extra supplies that they need for school, we can help give it to them,” said McDonald’s daughter, Karizma Loeffler, 10.
The immediate need is items for the silent auction. People may drop off any tangible items for donation at the Longhorn Barbecue at 653 C St. SW.
Organizers have set up a bank account at Northwest Commercial Bank at 4220 A St. SE. Suite 109, Auburn, WA, 98002. Checks must be made out to the Stingrays.
