Fire alarm: 9:40 a.m. (Auburn). Firefighters responding to reports from neighbors about a smoke alarm going off in another unit for 15 minutes with no one answering the door arrived to find an audible alarm in a unit on the second floor and no obvious signs of a fire problem from outside. Firefighters forced open the front door of the apartment and found that a smoldering fire in the fireplace had filled the unit with smoke because the fireplace damper was closed. Firefighters extinguished the smoldering fire with a water can and aired the apartment.
Jan. 1

Aid call: 8:09 p.m. (Auburn). Firefighters examined an infant who was lethargic and struggling to breathe after a fall, and then transported him to MAMC. The child was eventually treated at Mary Bridge Hospital because of the extent of his injuries.
Jan. 2
Car fire: 12:14 p.m. (Lea Hill). Firefighters responding to reports of a vehicle on fire near a building found a large Sprinter van with heavy fire to the engine compartment and cab area. Firefighters extinguished the fire quickly and contained the damage to the vehicle. There was a garage within six feet and minimal smoke damage because of the speed at which firefighters killed the conflagration. Firefighters contacted the owners and helped them clean things up and provided information regarding the incident. No civilians or firefighters were injured during this incident. The Fire Marshal’s office is investigating.
