Something was amiss and it wasn’t a high note at a district-wide choir concert last fall.

Adam Berry noticed his former school, Gildo Rey Elementary, was the only choir not in uniform.

“So I thought it would be a good idea for my Eagle Scout project,” Adam said.

Nearly a year later, Gildo Rey’s fifth-graders will sing in style, donning blue uniforms, thanks to Adam and friends.

Adam, a member of Auburn-based Boy Scout Troop 323 under Scoutmaster Rob Curtis, helped raise nearly $800 from school district staff, families and local businesses, enough to purchase 68 embroidered polo shirts for the student choir. The successful fundraising mission will land to Berry’s coveted Eagle Scout rank, joining his father, Elwin. Adam officially will earn that distinction next month.

“It’s a fun thing to do,” Adam said of the opportunity to complete his Eagle Scout community leadership project. “It’s fun to get everyone involved.”

Adam, 13, enters eighth grade at Mt. Baker Middle School this year. He is an honors students who enjoys science, history and singing in the school choir.

“He’s excited about school,” said Adam’s mother, Lisa, a teacher at Lake View Elementary.

Adam recently delivered the uniforms to Gildo Rey where they will be housed, used and reused for student choir performances.

“I was really impressed with his kind nature, commitment and hard work,” said Gildo Rey Principal Robin Logan. “He persevered. The way he set and reached a goal and put others ahead of his own interests was very impressive.”
