Two auto theft suspects’ attempt to elude Auburn police morphed into a high speed chase that ended with the rollover of the fleeing vehicle in Fife early Tuesday morning.
Shortly before midnight, Monday, Auburn police received a report of an auto theft in progress. When the stolen car passed an Auburn officer at Highway 18, the officer followed the stolen car to I-5, waiting for backup officers to arrive.
At some point south of the truck scales on I-5 southbound, officers turned on their overhead lights to stop the suspect in the stolen car.
The suspect accelerated to high speeds, lost control and rolled the car in Fife.
Emergency personnel took the 45-year-old man and a 22-year-old man to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tacoma, where the 45-year-old was listed in stable condition. No condition on the second suspect was available.
The collision was a single car collision, and one other car was damaged from flying debris.
No other injuries or property damage was reported.
Trooper Guy Gill, information officer for the Washington State Patrol in Pierce and Thurston counties, has not returned numerous phone calls seeking additional information.
