City and Habitat for Humanity to build transitional housing: wanna help?

Habitat for Humanity and City of Auburn to build transitional housing

March is the month the City of Auburn and Habitat for Humanity are to start turning a City-owned home at 612 9th St. SE into transitional housing.

A resolution to execute the contract with Habitat for Humanity comes before the Auburn City Council at a special meeting before its regular study session at 5:30 p.m. March 14 at Auburn City Hall, 25 W. Main St.

To complete the work by the fall of 2016, the City will use Community Development Block Grant funds.

“This came about as our property and facilities analyst was completing our list of City-owned properties and inquired about the property,” Dana Hinman, director of administration for the City of Auburn, explained March 4.

Hinman said the City used CDBG funds to buy the property about six years ago.

“Since it was purchased with HUD dollars, we are required to use it in compliance with CDBG guidelines or pay back the funds used to purchase it six years ago,” Hinman said.

Hinman said the City will ask volunteers to pitch in.
