By cutting commercial portraits into pieces and fitting  them together again in new ways, John Breitweiser changes and reimagines.

And, in encaustic and layer upon layer of melted wax,  Kathy Lobdell captures fantastic, living images of the human face.

People can check out the works of both artists in the City Hall Gallery at 25 West Main St. for the month of February.

Breitweiser, who has a master of fine arts from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, says his pieces use “a variety of media and subjects often exhibiting that quality of focused industry commonly called obsessive.

“The decisions I make tend to be strategic and intuitive,” Breitweiser said.

Lobdell, an art instructor at Auburn Riverside High School, says she uses the texture of “drips, runs and raised edges to give a sense that the art piece itself has life.”

Auburn’s Parks, Arts & Recreation Department changes the City Hall Gallery every month to display the artwork of regional artists.
