Mayor Pete Lewis, this past week, authorized the waiving of city fees associated with permitting and inspecting the installation of sewer back-flow protection during the flood season. Fees will be waived until March 1, 2010. Anyone in the city of Auburn who paid fees relating to this installation after Oct. 8, 2009 will have their fees refunded.

“This decision came at the urging of Municipal Services chairperson Gene Cerino,” said Lewis. “He saw a real need to offer real assistance to our community so they can prepare for a potential disaster, and we acted accordingly.”

A permit and inspection from the City is still required; however, no fees will be charged. This is a potential savings of up to $60. To obtain a permit, visit the City’s permit center on the second floor of city hall located at 25 West Main St.

In the event of flooding, one potential impact can be the backup of water and sewer into homes or businesses, a plumber can install a device to prevent back-flow coming into your home and causing further damage.

City officials are also warning citizens to be aware of contractors or service providers that could be engaging in fraudulent practices, scams or price gauging. Be sure that any service provider at your home or business is licensed and bonded and provides proper identification and never pay in advance for any service until it is completed to your satisfaction.
