FOR CHILDREN
Library Story Times offer age-appropriate learning activities for babies, toddlers, and preschoolers. These regular programs introduce children – and parents – to new books, new friends, music, rhymes and additional brain-building activities.
These programs also benefit parents and caregivers as well, giving ideas and resources for learning games and other techniques that help their little ones acquire the skills they’ll need so they’ll be ready to read. The simple act of regularly reading along and listening to stories together with mom, dad or caregivers helps even newborns develop concepts that build reading skills.
• Parents and their babies, from birth to 24 months, can enjoy cuddling, bouncing and word play. One baby per lap. Wednesdays at 10:15 a.m.
• Toddlers ages 2-3, Tuesdays at 10:15 a.m.
• Preschoolers ages 3-5 Tuesdays at 11 a.m.
For current schedules, call the library or check online at www.kcls.org.
Kids Read @4 Book Club offers fourth and fifth grade reading fanatics a chance to get together for snacks and talk about books — new discoveries and old favorites. New members are always welcome. Kids can call or stop by the library for each month’s selected title.
First Thursdays, 4 p.m. in the library meeting room.
FOR TEENS
Game On! After-school activities
Particularly valuable for “Latch-Key” kids alone after school, the Algona-Pacific Library’s weekly Game On! sessions offer free Wii, PS2 and Game Cube games and after-s1`chool activities, complete with snacks and computers for online access.
Kids need a place where they have free, supervised activities and a bite to eat after school. There are sound, strategic reasons behind this program: These activities help middle school and high school students learn to use the library, improve their information-seeking and computer skills, strengthen their interest in learning, and build a sense of community.
Wednesdays, 3-5 p.m.
Teen Reads is a book club for middle school and high school students who like to talk about books. The group meets monthly to discuss their book of the month, as well as all the other great books they’ve been reading. The first five teens to sign up each month receive a free copy of the group’s selected book of the month, courtesy of the Friends of the Algona-Pacific Library. All area middle and high school students are welcome to join the discussion.
Fourth Tuesdays, 3:30-5 p.m.
