The Army Corps of Engineers contacted the City of Auburn with information regarding the ongoing evaluation of damage to the Howard Hanson Dam sustained during the recent rain storms.
The Corps announced a pool-level restriction in order to further assess the extent of the damage.
The Corps has high confidence in the current integrity of the dam and that it presents no immediate danger to people and property below the dam. Operating under these restrictions is the most prudent measure to keep the public safe, according to the Corps. However if a significant rain event occurs there is an increased risk of flooding inside the Auburn city limits.
Current weather forecasts show a dry period ahead, and engineers will continue to reassess the pool restriction as conditions change at the dam. Careful deliberation will be given before any increase or other change of the maximum pool elevation.
City of Auburn officials will continue monitoring the Green River and the City of Auburn and the Army Corps of Engineers remain in communication over this issue and if the situation changes, residents will be notified.
