Delta Air Lines, Habitat for Humanity Seattle-King County dedicate first home in community for veterans

300 local Delta volunteers built the home in five weeks

Pacific Northwest employees from Delta Air Lines dedicated the first home in a development designed specifically for military veterans and their families, in partnership with Habitat for Humanity Seattle-King County.

The home is located in Pacific.

Over the last few weeks, more than 300 volunteer Delta employees – from baggage handlers and flight attendants to Delta’s Vice President in Seattle –rolled up their sleeves to build a brand new house. Many of the Delta volunteers are U.S. military veterans.

The homeowner is Rachel Grinage, a decorated U.S. Navy veteran and a single mother.

Grinage, who works as a pharmacy tech in a supermarket, goes above and beyond to show kindness and help her patients. She and her 9-year-old son, Ahmad, look forward to a home to call their own.

“Being a homeowner means the world to me,” Grinage said. “It will be my dream come true. It means happiness, stability and safety. It means everything.”

City of Pacific and Auburn leaders and dignitaries were on hand for the ceremony.

The Pacific project is part of Delta’s builds with Habitat for Humanity throughout the country this fall. More than 2,400 Delta employees will build or renovate homes in six cities, including Atlanta, Detroit, Los Angeles, Minneapolis/St. Paul, New York and Seattle.
