District announces Teachers of the Year

Julie McKenzie, Kathe Ball and Heidi Bendt are the 2014-15 Auburn School District Teachers of the Year.

The Auburn School District Board of Directors recognizes the trio at 7 p.m. May 11 in the board room of the James P. Fugate Administration building.

The district selects a teacher of the year for the elementary, middle and high school levels.

McKenzie teaches second grade at Alpac Elementary. Ball works in language arts at Olympic Middle School, as does Bendt at Auburn Mountainview High School.

The three winners move on for consideration as the regional teacher of the year. One teacher from each region will move on to the state competition. The state winner will move on to the national competition.

Hall-of-Famer

Mikah Johnson, a fifth-grader at Washington Elementary, was selected as one of 10 outstanding patrollers in Washington state to be inducted in the 2015 AAA School Safety Patrol Hall of Fame.

In recognition of his dedication to safety, community stewardship and leadership, Johnson was recognized at an evening awards ceremony before a Seattle Mariners game at Safeco Field on April 24.

“Mikah is truly a leader and is committed to the safety of his schoolmates,” said John Markwell, school patrol advisor at Washington Elementary. “He has a passion for safety and continually seeks ways to improve procedures and systems to help ensure students arrive to and from school safely.”

Elsewhere

The Auburn School District Board of Directors recently recognized Jill Petrie, certified occupational therapist assistant, for her outstanding service. Petrie, who is in her 21st year with the district, works with special education students under the supervision of an occupational therapist. They work on fine and gross motor skills to allow students to access their educational environment. Petrie works with elementary students in grades preschool through fifth grade. … The school board also honored Abigail Lyn Maza, a fifth-grader at Arthur Jacobsen, for being an outstanding student. Abigail is being recognized for her dedication to learning, academic achievement and outstanding citizenship.
