A month after voters within the Auburn School District approved a $110 million bond to build a new Auburn High School the contract for the project is already out to bid.

Bob Kenworthy, projects coordinator for the District, said recently that bid openings are scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 17 and that work should start Feb. 18 on the south side of the school site between Second and Third Streets.

The first order of business, Kenworthy said, will be to build a temporary parking lot at the site of the present tennis courts, ballfields and parking lot.

“The new main classroom academic wing will start as soon as they can get other stuff out of the way,” Kenworthy said. “We’re targeting completion of that part of the work by August of 2014, and using the new three-story building for the 2014 2015 school year.”

The new red brick building will face East Main Street.

As soon as the new high school building is finished and occupied, Kenworthy said, the contractor will start knocking down portions of the old Auburn High School. During the summer of 2014 and on into 2015, work is to center on the connection of the new classroom building with the Performing Arts Center and auto shop.

During phase 3 in the summer of 2015 on into 2016, contractors will work on the parking lot and tennis court improvements on the north and northwest portions of the site.

On another matter, Kenworthy said, the district has begun to look for additional property for another elementary school, probably on the south end of the district.

The “specifically desired location,” Kenworthy noted, has not yet been determined.

“We are also looking seriously at the need next year for portable classrooms,” Kenworthy said, adding that the recipients of the portables will be the overcrowded Lakeland and Lea Hills elementary schools.
