The Rotary Club of Auburn hosts its annual charity golf tournament – the Earl Averill Invitational – at Washington National on Friday, Sept. 20.

The tournament is named after Rotarian and former professional baseball player Earl Averill Jr., who played catcher in the major leagues from 1956 to 1963 with the Chicago Cubs, Chicago White Sox, Los Angeles Angels, Philadelphia Phillies and Cleveland Indians. He is the son of the late Howard Earl Averill, a Hall of Fame center fielder (1929-41).

Each year Averill and fellow Rotarians invite sports personalities to come play some golf, meet their fans and have an afternoon raising money for children’s charities.

In addition to Averill, Doug Sisk, Dennis Boyd, Bill Krueger, Jack Patera and Sam Adkins are scheduled to appear, play in the tournament and be available for photos and autographs.

There is still room for a few foursomes in this year’s field. The cost is $150 per golfer and includes a golf cart and dinner. A silent auction and raffle prizes will be a part of the dinner festivities.

Cost per foursome is $500 ($100 off) until Sept. 6.

Last year’s tournament netted more than $20,000, which allowed for major donations to various children’s charities locally and throughout the world through the Auburn Rotary Foundation. Local recipients included ACAP, Auburn Youth Resources, and the Children’s Home Society.

Donations also made field trips for first- and fifth-graders in the Auburn schools to the Mary Olson Farm possible.

The Rotary Club of Auburn is a service club organization that has been active in Auburn for more than 50 years. It is part of Rotary International, a worldwide organization that has approximately 1.2 million members in 30,000 clubs, spread throughout 161 countries.

The club meets every Wednesday at the Auburn Golf Course, from noon until 1:15 p.m. Guests are welcome.

If you would like to enjoy an afternoon of golf, while helping children, please contact Rotarian Brett Cowman at golf@auburnrotary.org or FAX 253-322-3960 for a registration form.
