The King County Medical Examiners office has identified the man fatally shot early Tuesday in the parking lot of the north end Top Foods at 1702 Auburn Way N. as Thomas J. Bennett, 48, of Auburn.

The Medical Examiner completed an autopsy Wednesday morning and determined that Bennett died of multiple gunshot wounds.

Auburn police say a 28-year-old Kent man shot Bennett to death in front of Bennett’s own son early Tuesday morning during a confrontation in the parking lot of the store. Bennett’s son later told police that his father and the suspect had an ongoing dispute. Officers and paramedics performed CPR on Bennett, but pronounced him dead at the scene.

The gunman fled on foot, and police initially used a K-9 unit without success to search the area around the store. Police took him into custody at the Kentbrook Apartments on South 248th Street at 9:40 a.m. Tuesday. He was alone at the time of his arrest.

“He was taken into custody without incident and was exiting the house when SWAT officers were taking position and about to attempt contact,” said Auburn Police Sgt. David Colglazier.

As of Wednesday, police had not yet found the weapon. The Auburn Reporter will not identify the suspect until prosecutors charge with the crime, which is expected to occur late Thursday.

Detectives are still trying to piece together the events that led to the fatal shooting.

“Our focus has been on finding him, now our job is to put together what happened and why,” Colglazier said.
