Fire damages Auburn apartment; VRFA quickly douses it

Fire damaged an Auburn apartment and water damage was sustained to another Tuesday afternoon.

There were no injuries to civilians or firefighters.

Ten Valley Regional Fire Authority units responded to report of a sprinkler head activation inside an apartment at the 1900 block of A Street Southeast at 3:39 p.m. Smoke was seen coming from the apartment.

The 911 caller was unable to open the door and said smoke was pouring from the windows. When firefighters entered the apartment, smoke was encountered. The sprinkler had kept the fire in check, so the remainder of the fire quickly was extinguished.

Fire damage was sustained to the apartment where the fire originated and water damage was sustained to at least one downstairs apartment and the hallway carpet.

The cause was determined to be a kitchen fire that started in an unoccupied apartment that had had its power turned off for a period of time. When the power was restored to the apartment, there were items left on the stove that smoldered and started the fire.
