The Valley Regional Fire Authority responded to 174 calls for service between Oct. 7 and Oct. 12, among them the following:
OCT. 7
Automatic fire alarm: 5 p.m., Lea Hill. Engine 34 responded to the 12700 block of Southeast 312th Street for a fire alarm activation at the Seasons Apartments. Maintenance workers reported that they had extinguished a fire in a dryer in one of the apartments on the third floor. VRFA personnel checked the room and discovered that the fire was out then used positive pressure ventilation in the stairwell to remove smoke on the third floor. They traced the cause to a pillow in a dryer that had broken open and deposited its contents on the heating element.
OCT. 8
Hazardous materials: 8:11 a.m., Pacific. The hazardous materials crew from South King County Fire Zone 3 responded to property at 310 West Valley Highway South in Pacific after a construction crew reported one worker suffering the effects of a mysterious stink that was burning her eyes. Hazardous materials technicians could not locate the cause of the odiferous irritant because of the large number of abandoned containers and vehicles on the property.
OCT. 9
Aid call: 2:09 p.m., Auburn. Engine 34 responded to a fall victim in the 300 block of 3rd Street Southeast and found a 56-year-old woman who had fallen from her porch at 4 a.m. and had been unable to move since that time. Personnel found the woman in extreme pain, complaining of lower back pain, right rib pain, and numerous cuts and scrapes. They treated her with oxygen and an ambulance brought her to AMR.
OCT. 10
Chimney fire: 12:59 p.m., Auburn. Units from the VRFA and Kent Fire Department responded to heavy smoke belching forth from a chimney on a north Auburn apartment building. Engine 31 arrived to find the smoke had dissipated. What happened was that a resident in the process of being evicted from the apartment had been burning garbage and other materials in the fireplace. Since this involved a landlord and tenant dispute, the Auburn Police Department was brought in. Police found marijuana and methamphetamines in the apartment and placed the resident, who also had outstanding warrants, under arrest.
Motor vehicle accident: 3:15 p.m., Auburn. Aid 32, Engine 31, Engine 38, Battalion 31 and Medic 6 responded to a report of a two-vehicle accident in the 1900 block of A Street Southeast where they found two vehicles blocking the roadway, both heavily damaged. They treated and stabilized two persons, then tucked them into an ambulance that brought them to Auburn Regional Medical Center. Auburn Police are investigating the cause of the accident.
OCT. 12
Residential fire: 6:58 p.m., Algona. VRFA units responded to a reported residential fire in the 800 block of Celery St. Engine 38 arrived first and found a 5’ x 5’ bon fire behind a home. Personnel snuffed out the fire and set to educating the homeowner about the burn ban.
