Prime Engine –last seen winning the Gottstein Futurity at Emerald Downs – returns to action Saturday in the $1 million Delta Downs Jackpot (Grade 3) for 2-year-olds in Vinton, La.

Owned by Dr. Mark Dedomenico of Redmond and trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, Prime Engine breaks from post No. 1 with Russell Baze riding at 119 pounds. A Kentucky-bred by Northern Afleet, Prime Engine is 8-to-1 on the morning line.

Contested at 1 1/16 miles on a six-furlong oval, the Delta Downs Jackpot drew a full 10-horse field with two also-eligibles, with the winner earning $600,000.

Mr. Z, fifth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, is the 5-to-2 morning line favorite, followed by Delta Downs-based Golden Actor at 7-to-2, and California shipper Conquest Tsunami at 4-to-1. Red Button, owned by Al and Sandee Kirkwood of Vancouver, Wash., is 12-to-1.

Prime Engine was a late-season flash at Emerald Downs, earning an 83 Beyer while winning his September 13 debut by 10¼ lengths. Two weeks later, stretching out to two turns, Prime Engine toppled previously unbeaten Trackattacker while winning the Gottstein by 5½ lengths. In the Gottstein, Prime Engine dusted Trackattacker on the last turn, opening a commanding eight-length lead, and pretty much coasted to the wire.

“The horse had a tender shin in the winter so we took all the time we needed last summer,” said Mike Puhich, Prime Engine’s trainer in Washington. “He’s a dream horse, really nice. He’s push button during a race, has natural speed and can carry it.”

Shipped to Hollendorfer, Prime Engine has posted several big workouts capped by Wednesday’s half-mile in :46.80 from the starting gate at Santa Anita.

Prime Engine was the morning line favorite in last week’s $100,000 Bob Hope Stakes (G3) at Del Mar, but was scratched in favor of the Delta Downs Jackpot.

“First we thought about the Breeders’ Cup (Juvenile), but it would have been too much too soon,” Puhich said. “We discussed other options and felt if he continued to train well, we’d look at the Delta Jackpot. Jerry really likes him. He’s trained great in California.”

Delta Downs will have a first post of 11:15 a.m. (Pacific) on Saturday. The Delta Downs Jackpot is Race 7 at 2:15 p.m.

Dedomenico, Hollendorfer and Baze also have Majestic Presence entered in the $400,000 Delta Downs Princess (G3) for 2-year-old fillies at one mile.

Co-owned by Glen Todd, Majestic Presence raced wide while finishing ninth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1), and before that was fourth in the Chandelier (G1) at Santa Anita.

Take Charge Brandi, who led gate-to-wire at 61-to-1 in the Juvenile Fillies, heads a full field of 10 in the Princess, which goes as Race 6 at 1:43 p.m.

Class Included, 2012 Emerald Downs Horse of the Meeting, defends her title in the $200,000 Treasure Chest for older fillies and mares at one mile. The 6-year-old mare, 13-for-27 lifetime with earnings of $633,026, is 11-for-18 on dirt including a six-length win in the 2013 Treasure Chest.

The Treasure Chest is Race 5 at 1:13 p.m.

The 11-race card includes eight stakes and aggregate purses of $2.3 million.

Temperatures are forecast to be in the low 70s, with a 90 percent chance of rain and possible thunderstorms, according to The Weather Channel.
