GRCC offers wilderness training class

Every year hundreds of people lose their lives or need to be rescued while enjoying the outdoors.

Green River Community College’s natural resources program developed a basic wilderness survival training class, and is open to the community and especially is appropriate for teens, scout troops, hunters, hikers and backpackers.

The eight-hour, hands-on class – scheduled for 7 a.m.-4 p.m., July 18 or Aug. 8 – will be taught by an experienced wilderness survival trainer as well as a woman EMT, both students in the natural resources program at GRCC.

Topics and demonstrations include shelter options, fire preparation and lighting techniques, how to signal for a rescue, being prepared for survival situations and having the ideal survival kit.

An advanced overnight class will be offered in the fall quarter on Oct. 24-25.

The summer class fee is $89.
