Hit-and-run accident kills former Auburn Riverside sports star

A hit-and-run accident killed a 23-year-old woman as she was crossing East Valley Highway in Sumner around 11 p.m. Saturday, Sumner police said.

A hit-and-run accident killed a 23-year-old woman as she was crossing East Valley Highway in Sumner around 11 p.m. Saturday, Sumner police said.

The woman was identified as Rachel Givens, a paraeducator and coach at Muckleshoot Tribal School, news source reported Monday. Givens was a 2008 Auburn Riverside High School graduate, where she starred in basketball and soccer.

Friends said Givens was about to join them inside the Log Cabin Pub on the highway when she was struck by a car while crossing the street. The driver then sped off.

According to investigators, a small dark sedan or sports car left the scene and was heading north.Givens was rushed to Tacoma General Hospital in critical condition.

A hospital spokesperson said she passed away Monday.Police ask anyone who sees a vehicle in the area with serious front-end damage to call the Sumner police tip line at 253-299-5678.

The Auburn Riverside soccer team remembered Givens with a moment of silence before its game against Tahoma on Tuesday night.
