It’s official — recall of Cy Sun certified

On Tuesday morning King County Elections officially certified the results of the June 25 special election to recall former Pacific Mayor Cy Sun. The official voter turnout was 49 percent, with 1,453 of the 3,016 ballots issued counted. The final tally of the vote was 949 (65.4 percent) votes in favor of recalling Sun with 502 (34.6 percent) in favor of retaining the former mayor.

On Tuesday morning King County Elections officially certified the results of the June 25 special election to recall former Pacific Mayor Cy Sun.

The official voter turnout was 49 percent, with 1,453 of the 3,016 ballots issued counted.

The final tally of the vote was 949 (65.4 percent) votes in favor of recalling Sun with 502 (34.6 percent) in favor of retaining the former mayor.

Councilmember James McMahan is now mayor of the city and will preside until the council elects a new mayor to fill out the rest of Sun’s vacated term, which expires in December 2015.

The council is expected to choose either Councilmember John Jones, who ran against Sun for mayor in 2011, or Council President Leanne Guier to head the city.

The council meets at 7:30 p.m. today to name candidates for the position.

A public forum at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Pacific Community Center Gymnasium will allow residents to submit questions to the candidates for the mayoral job.

The council is expected to choose the next mayor by vote at a meeting on Thursday. Candidates for the position cannot vote in the selection process.
