The King County Library System announced on March 13 that it is closing all libraries for the next month in order to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, or the novel coronavirus.
The current plan is to re-open libraries on April 13, but that date may change, depending on the current state of the outbreak.
“Like neighboring library systems in Seattle, Pierce and Snohomish Counties, this decision was made out of the utmost concern for the health, safety and well-being of library patrons, staff and the community,” the release reads. “The scientific evidence that social distancing can help stop the spread of COVID-19 is a compelling factor in taking this precautionary step.”
Patrons are encouraged not to return items while their libraries are closed, and all due dates have been extended to April 30; additionally, all late fees accrued between March 1 and April 30 will be waived.
All of KCLS’ online resources will continue to be available, including the ability to sign up for a digital eCard and have access to eBooks, audiobooks, streaming TV and movies, online databases and more, tax filing resources, and taking the 2020 Census.
For more information, patrons can follow the library system on Facebook and Twitter or calling 425-461-9600 or 800-462-9600.
