Local events planned for eclipse

Looking for a place to view the solar eclipse? Local libraries and the Museum of Flight host events on Monday. Aug. 21.

Locally, the eclipse will start at 9:09 a.m., peak at 10:21 a.m. and end at 11:39 a.m.

King County Library System

Several branches of the King County Library will have eclipse viewing events, weather permitting.

• Algona-Pacific, 255 Ellingson Road, Pacific. 9:15–11:30 a.m. Make a button and check out books about the sun and moon. A limited number of eclipse viewing glasses will be available to share at the program.

• Kent, 212 Second Avenue N., 9:15–11 a.m. Pick up a pair of free eclipse viewing glasses at the event, while supplies last. Bring a pair of binoculars to learn how to view the eclipse indirectly by making a projection through them onto another surface.

• Des Moines, 21620 11th Avenue S. 9:45-11 a.m. Gather on the green adjacent to the east side of the building. Pick up a pair of free eclipse viewing glasses at the event while supplies last.

• Valley View, 17850 Military Road S., SeaTac. 9:45–10:45 a.m. View the eclipse, make a craft and listen to stories about the sun and moon. A limited number of eclipse viewing glasses will be available to share at the program.

Museum of Flight

The Museum of Flight, 9404 E. Marginal Way S. in Tukwila, and NASA partner for a free event watching the first total solar eclipse over the entire US in 99 years. NASA’s Gulfstream III science aircraft will be based at the museum Aug. 20 and 21 for its airborne science mission of eclipse. While the plane is making observations high over Oregon during the 10:12 a.m. eclipse, NASA officials and Museum educators will guide the public through the free solar event from the museum lawn from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. The first 1000 visitors to the Museum will receive ISO-certified safe, NASA-branded glasses for watching the eclipse. Live coverage of NASA’s Eclipse MegaCast live coverage of the eclipse will be shown in the museum’s theater 9-10:45 a.m., included with admission to the museum.
