This weekend is the last chance to catch the Auburn Mountainview High School production of “Zombie Prom,” a rousing musical set against a backdrop of 1950s postwar atomic hysteria, featuring rock and roll and, of course … the undead.
“I’m always looking for new scripts, and this one being kind of a satire on the late ’50s with the whole atomic stuff that was going on, kind of intrigued me,” drama instructor Paul Fouhy said.
The play, which debuted off-Broadway in 1993, revolves around a teen couple – Jonny and Toffee – who fall in love under their desks during an atomic air raid drill at Enrico Fermi High School. When Toffee’s parents force her to break up with Jonny, the despondent teen hurls himself into a nuclear power plant. But rather than ending his life, the radiation turns the rebellious teen into a zombie. The rest of the play revolves around the couple’s fight against disciplinarian principal Miss Strict’s efforts to keep zombie Jonny from returning to school and attending the senior prom.
“I found the play terribly exciting,” junior Madeline Slettedahl, who plays Toffee, said. “I had mostly heard the soundtrack before the script. It’s almost like an opera; there is not a lot of dialogue. When I heard it and how it portrayed the ’50s, I just loved it.”
According to Fouhy, the musical also features a live rock band.
“There is a band performing. Karen Frerichs, the choir director, was in charge of gathering up a rock and roll band, with guitar, bass, drums and synthesizer in addition to the piano,” Fouhy said.
According to senior Brandon Kinney, who plays Jonny, it is the music that sets this play apart from others Auburn Mountainview has produced.
“When I got a CD and I heard the music, it was awesome,” he said. “I liked it because it works so well with the play.”
“Once they heard the music they were very excited about it,” Fouhy said. “It has good ’50s rock and roll music.”
“My favorite song is ‘Blast from the Past,’” Slettedahl said. “It’s where Jonny first comes out from a locker as a zombie, and we all get to run around the stage and auditorium screaming.”
According to Fouhy, reaction to the play, which opened last weekend has been positive.
“The opening weekend reaction was absolutely fabulous, everyone loved it,” Fouhy said. “It’s a good high energy show with toe-tapping music.”
“Zombie Prom” begins at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday (March 26-28) at the Auburn Mountainview Theater at 28900 124th Ave. S.E. Tickets are $6 for adults, $5 for students.
