The Pacific City Council voted unanimously on Monday to appoint Katie Garberding to the vacant Position No. 1 seat.

The appointment to the council is the second for Garberding, who was previously appointed to fill Mayor Leanne Guier’s vacant seat last August. Garberding served until Dec. 31.

Garberding, who works for an accounting firm in Bellevue, has been a Pacific resident since 2009.

“Having previously been appointed to Pacific City Council it is an honor to be placed back on council, once again, to assist with moving our city forward,” Garberding said. “During my prior experience on council, I learned much of how the city functions and am very proud to be selected to serve my community once again.

“I decided to apply for the open council seat to be a voice, and to take on the issues that impact my family and my community,” she continued. “My focus has always been on building up the community in which I have made my home, and will always be foremost and number one.”

Among Garberding’s previous community involvements was her successful drive to install a light to illuminate the flagpole at City Hall.”I was tired of driving past that flagpole at night and seeing no light on it,” she told the Reporter previously. “It’s just a matter of getting involved. Things might not get changed, but at least you did something other than sitting on the sidelines. I just learned to become a voice in the community.”

Garberding said she intends to continue to be that voice.

“There are many issues facing the city, and I look forward to any suggestions and/or ideas from residents and business owners,” Garberding said. “We all have a stake in decisions made at the dais. With community input and support, we all can take part in improving the city that we have made our home.

“I also encourage the community to attend the council meetings and workshops and to speak out on what they want to see happen in the community,” she said. “When you speak, you will be heard.”

Councilmembers Vic Kave, Tren Walker, Joshua Putnam and Stacy Knudtson Oliveira all voted to appoint Garberding. Councilmembers John Jones and Clint Steiger were absent.

Garberding replaces Gary Hulsey, who served on the council for seven years but recently resigned for health reasons. Her term expires Dec. 31, 2015.
