Pacific police chief acquitted of drunken driving charges

Pacific Police Chief John Calkins was found not guilty of drunken driving by a Bonney Lake jury Thursday.

After two hours of deliberation, the court issued the verdict.

Calkins, 54, was arrested Aug. 5 after another motorist said he was driving erratically on Highway 410.

A Bonney Lake police officer Robert Kocher testified that Calkins appeared to be intoxicated. Calkins denied being drunk. He says he might have crossed the center line while using one hand to cover a hole in his throat and turning to talk to his wife.

Jury forewoman Kathleen Edman notes that no blood sample was taken, and there was only one witness to Calkins’ driving — someone who was not an officer.
