Two days into the job, Annette Spicuzza, the City of Pacific’s interim public safety director, has stepped down, according to King 5 News.
Spiccuza had accepted Pacific Mayor Cy Sun’s offer earlier in the week.
In the meantime, claiming that Sun did not follow protocol when he placed the police chief and a lieutenant on paid leave in the first place, the city’s Civil Service Commission on Friday reinstated both men.
Sun had placed them on paid leave while an investigation into allegations of harrassment and intimidation continued.
In a statement released Friday to King 5, Spiccuza explained her decision.
“Mayor Sun reached out to me and sought my provisional appointment to maintain leadership and ensure delivery of public safety services to the citizens of Pacific, during the investigation period. The issues at the City of Pacific are deep seeded. As a result, it has prevented my appointment and assistance to the Police Department. I wish the City of Pacific and its citizens all the best,” Spicuzza wrote.
Spicuzza had worked for the University of Washington, Federal Way and Kennewick police departments.
But it was at her last job as police chief of U.C. Davis that Spiccuza picked up national notoriety. She resigned after her officers pepper sprayed Occupy protesters on campus in November of 2011.
City council member Gary Hulsey said the mayor had no right to hire Spicuzza without council permission, according to King 5 News.
