The King County Road Services Division will be replacing a culvert underneath Kent-Black Diamond Road south of Covington next week that could result in a lengthy detour for motorists. The road will be closed in the 30000 block from 7 a.m. Monday, June 23 through 4 p.m. next Saturday. Motorists commuting through the area can detour via State Route 18 and the Auburn-Black Diamond Road. During the closure, crews will be installing a larger culvert under the roadway in that location. The existing aging culvert has cracked and deteriorated to the point where water is leaking into soil – undermining both the roadway and the road shoulder. If the culvert is not replaced, the road could collapse.
The City of Auburn is offering a limited number of parking permits to commuters in the Auburn Station garage on portions of the second, third and sixth floors as well as a temporary gravel lot at 2nd and A Street Southeast, north of Herfy’s Restaurant.

There won’t be enough money in the King County budget for 2009 and likely well beyond, so officials expect “deep, searing” cutbacks will be required, particularly of the county’s criminal justice systems.
