Auburn City Councilmember Bill Peloza has been elected chair of the Metropolitan Solid Waste Management Advisory Board.

The King County Council formed the board in 2005 as an advisory committee to the council in all matters relating to the solid waste management system and waste export system planning.

The board consists of 28 King County cities, including Auburn. King County uses the Cedar Hills Landfill (CHL) in Maple Valley for the disposal of garbage waste. In 2005, it was estimated that the CHL would close in 2016. However, since that time, King County has extended the closure time to 2030 as a result of improved resident recycling, transfer station efficiencies and landfill management changes.
