Police arrest caregiver at adult family home for alleged sexual abuse of an elderly resident

Auburn Police arrest a caregiver at an adult family home for alleged sexual abuse of an elderly resident.

On Thursday night Auburn Police arrested a caregiver at an adult family home in Auburn for alleged sexual abuse of an 83-year-old resident.

Having responded to the home in the 2700 block of Forest Ridge Drive Southeast at 7:20 p.m. upon the complaint of the elderly woman’s family, officers began an investigation that led to the 67-year-old caregiver’s arrest and his subsequent booking into the SCORE jail for investigation of sexual assault.

“The victim in this case has either Alzheimer’s or dementia, so her communication is very limited,” Auburn Police Cmdr. Mark Callier said late Friday afternoon. “We’re not sure if she was able to communicate what was happening, or if the family just felt that something was wrong. But the family placed a hidden camera in the victim’s room and then caught the suspect’s actions on video. Once the family saw that, they immediately called police, and police viewed it and went on and made the arrest.”

As of late Friday, the Auburn Police Department declined to release the man’s name because the King County Prosecutor’s Office had not yet officially charged him. He is an Auburn resident.

“He was booked for rape in the second degree, but of course that’s just the investigation charge. Obviously, the investigation is ongoing, and once official charges are filed, more charges could be added,” Callier said.

Auburn Police detectives interviewed the man and he will be transferred at an-as-yet undetermined date and time into the King County Jail.

Police removed 11 other elderly residents from the home and ambulances transported them to area hospitals, where they will be until arrangements can be made for their future care.

“The suspect confirmed to detectives what was on the video,” Callier said. “Whether he’s completely forthcoming or not we don’t know 100 percent. As of right now, we only have the one victim.”
