Dolph Swanson lives more comfortably in his Auburn home, thanks to a little help from friends.

Volunteers recently replaced the front porch, repaired a shed and installed a walk-in shower to Swanson’s small home that sits on a large lot on D Street Southwest.

The 75-year-old disabled man appreciates the repairs. The home, which has been in the family since 1938, holds many memories.

The project was part of National Rebuilding Day, which provides free home repairs and modifications for low-income residents – senior citizens, persons with disabilities, military veterans and families in need.

More than 500 Rebuilding Together South Sound volunteers joined Rebuilding Together affiliates nationwide on April 25.

A crew of about 20 volunteers from Seattle-based Walsh Construction repaired Swanson’s home. Sunrise Plumbing put in the new shower.

“It’s always fun to do this,” said Chuck Holcom, with Walsh.

Rebuilding Together South Sound took in 20 home rehabilitation projects.

With volunteer and in-kind community support, each dollar raised by Rebuilding Together South Sound provides a minimum of $4 worth of work for recipients. Since 2001, Rebuilding Together South Sound has completed 581 projects with repairs worth nearly $5.8 million.

Rebuilding Together South Sound also provides emergency repairs and home modifications year-round.
