As fast as Erika Lombardo’s record-setting pace was in the 100-meter dash, it paled in comparison to how fast she scrambled prior to her district final last Saturday.
“I realized I had forgotten (my uniform top),” the Auburn Mountainview senior said. “I took my sweats off and realized it. I ran, grabbed it and was out of breath. I thought, ‘Uh-oh, this is going to be a bad race.'”
It wasn’t.
Lombardo blistered the field, capturing the title in a meet-record 12.31 seconds at the West Central District III/Southwest District IV 3A showdown. Lombardo broke the previous record of 12.56 seconds set by Germe Poston of Franklin Pierce.
“I had a great start, and I’m not really known for my starts,” Lombardo said. “But I was out ahead in the beginning, and I just kept the lead.”
Lombardo also won the 200-meter district title in 25.90, highlighting the Lions’ seventh-place, 39-point finish.
Lombardo joined senior Abi Alfrey and Whitney Echols and sophomore Nicole Carter in taking the 400 relay win with a time of 49.29.Echols added a third in the 100 hurdles, with a 15.18.
The foursome competes at this week’s state 3A meet.
