The Rotary Club of Auburn hosted its annual charity golf tournament – the Earl Averill Invitational – at Washington National last Friday. It raised an estimated $25,000 for children’s charities.

The day started with a celebrity breakfast at Oddfella’s Pub & Eatery in Auburn.

Notbles in attendance were Doug Sisk from the 1986 World Series champion New York Mets and Doug North of the Seattle Seahawks.

The tournament is named after Rotarian and former professional baseball player Earl Averill Jr., who played catcher in the major leagues from 1956 to 1963. He is the son of the late Howard Earl Averill, a Hall of Fame center fielder (1929-41).

Each year Averill and fellow Rotarians invite sports personalities to come play some golf, meet their fans and have an afternoon raising money for children’s charities.

The Rotary Club of Auburn is a service club organization that has been active in Auburn for more than 50 years. It is part of Rotary International, a worldwide organization.

The club meets every Wednesday at the Auburn Golf Course, from noon until 1:15 p.m. Guests are welcome.
