Seattle Seahawks tight end John Carlson was the featured special guest speaker at the Federal Way & Auburn Boys and Girls Club and EX3 Teen Center 18th annual Breakfast for Kids fundraiser Wednesday morning at Emerald Downs.
During his speech, Carlson recalled childhood memories of growing up in a small town in Minnesota. He told the crowd that he learned early on there is always going to be someone better than him at what he does. But he believes that the person who works the hardest and is most prepared has the best chance of succeeding. He knew that if he worked hard on the field it was an opportunity for him to get a college scholarship. Carlson played college football at Notre Dame.
“It was a privilege to have John come and speak to us this morning and share his inspiring words,” said King County Councilmember Pete von Reichbauer, honorary Breakfast for Kids chairman. “At only 25, he proves to be wise beyond his years. As a newcomer to the Northwest, I really appreciate John’s desire to give back and support the youth in our region.”
The mission of the Boys and Girls Club is to inspire and enable young people, especially those who in need the club most, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens.
The membership fee at the Federal Way and Auburn Boys and Girls Club is $20 a year, $36 a year for the EX3 Ron Sandwith Teen Center. The cost of programs and services for one member in a Boys and Girls Club is $500 annually.
Funds raised at the Breakfast for Kids go to support the actual costs.
“The staff, mentors and volunteers who are at the club each and every day are not only there for fun and games, but to also teach character and provide guidance,” said Shelley Puariea, executive director of the Federal Way/Auburn Boys and Girls Club.
