Skyline derails Auburn in state 4A quarterfinal playoff

Heralded Skyline erupted for 24 second-quarter points and shut down Auburn’s powerful ground game for a 38-2 victory over the Trojans in a state Class 4A quarterfinal playoff game Saturday afternoon at Sammamish.

The Spartans (12-0) will face Ferris (11-1) in the state semifinals this Saturday in Spokane.

The Trojans, meanwhile, finished a solid season with an 11-1 record and the South Puget Sound League North Division title.

Auburn’s offense, which averaged 37 points and 382 rushing yards a game, was held to just 173 yards on 45 carries.

Skyline’s big-play threats, meanwhile, shined. Gino Simone returned a punt 55 yards for a touchdown, while Jake Heaps tossed a pair of scoring passes – 4 yards to William Chandler and 41 yards to Kasen Williams. Heaps also ran 2 yards out for a touchdown.

Auburn scored the first points of the game on a safety, but could generate little after that.

“They’ve got Division I athletes out there, and we’ve got sophomore wrestlers,” Auburn coach Gordon Elliott said. “I don’t think there’s anyone in the state who matches up with those guys.”
