Poetry at The Station Bistro presents the works of Lucas Smiraldo and David D. Horowitz on Wednesday.
The program is from 7-9 p.m. at the Bistro, 110 Second St. SW, No. 125, one block south of West Main Street, on the east side of the Auburn Transit Center.
Coffee and conversation follow readings. It is an open mic opportunity. The public is invited.
About the poets
Lucas Smiraldo has directed his writing and energy to applying spoken word to social conditions, and circumstances that need attention and require a good shake and stir. His efforts have led to the creation of seminal pieces, including pilot webisodes of Slam Town, a live choral drama, Voice of the Americas, fusing spoken word with an original sound score from Wrick Wolff, and the creation of a new touring show for youth, Eleven Days in the Life of Dr. King which integrates 12 original works of spoken word with contemporary dance and music.
Smiraldo is also active in the poetry slam scene and won the right to open for the Def Poetry Jam tour, which featured Sekou Tha Misfit.
He has written and produced 12 plays, and presented more than 100 commissioned works for social and cultural institutions, including the Tacoma Art Museum, The International Museum of Glass, The City of Seattle, The Organization of Black Airline Pilots, the Tacoma Arts Commission, The Broadway Center for Performing Arts, The Center for Spiritual Living, Washington State History Museum, Pacific Lutheran University, MESA, Yakima Universalist and many others.
Smiraldo is also a teaching artist and has worked in more than 30 schools, school districts and colleges teaching poetry spoken word.
David D. Horowitz is a poet, writer, editor and publisher. Born in New York City in 1955 he earned bachelor’s degrees in philosophy and English from the University of Washington and his master’s in English from Vanderbilt University. He taught at Vanderbilt, Seattle Central Community College and, briefly, Shoreline Community College.
Horowitz founded and manages Rose Alley Press where he publishes outstanding poets from around the Northwest and elsewhere. Recent poetry collections published by Rose Alley include Sky Above the Temple and Stars Beyond the Battlesmoke. His poems and essays have appeared in numerous journals, including The Lyric, Candelabrum, The New Formalist, The Smoking Poet, and Exterminating Angel.
Horowitz has edited and published two Northwest poetry anthologies: Limbs of the Pine, Peaks of the Range and Many Trails to the Summit. He frequently organizes poetry readings in the Puget Sound region and in 2005 received the PoetsWest Award for his contributions to Northwest literature.
