A 29-year-old Pacific resident died Wednesday evening after he lay down on the Burlington Northern Santa Fa Railroad tracks in front of an oncoming southbound Sounder train, Auburn Police said.

Police spokesman Steve Stocker described what happened as an act of suicide.

“It’s pretty cut and dried, really,” Stocker said Thursday morning. “It was in the 900 block of East Valley Highway, which is pretty much at the bottom of Lake Tapps Parkway there on East Valley. A Sounder Train was southbound from Seattle at about 5:40 p.m., and a male subject was walking along the railroad tracks, and just as the train was getting close, he laid down across the tracks, and the train ran him over.”

Trains southbound from Seattle were delayed for hours, but as of 7:30 p.m., a Sound Transit spokesman reported all trains released and moving.
