Two seniors from Auburn Mountainview High School, Daniel Montgomery and Angeleah Tena, and two seniors from Auburn Riverside, Anthony Tordillos and Christopher Hanson, were recognized as Commended Students in the 2010 National Merit Scholarship Program.
More than 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2010 competition for National Merit Scholarships, Commended Students placed among the top 5 percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2010 competition by taking the 2008 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).

Laura Theimer was awarded the Cities and Schools Forum 2009 Betty Smith Spirit of Education Award at the 11th annual Reaching Out Fair, co-hosted by the Auburn School District, the Cities of Auburn, Algona and Pacific, Green River Community College and the Muckleshoot Indian Tribe. Theimer, a volunteer and fundraiser, was selected from a pool of nominees based on her dedication to improving the lives and education of children behind the scenes. Theimer has served on the Terminal Park Elementary and Mt. Baker Middle School PTA boards. She is currently president of the Auburn Council of PTAs. Betty Smith was known for her dedication to community. She worked tirelessly, often behind-the-scenes, and was known for her work with the Auburn School Board, local community organizations and being a part of developing the cooperative relationship with the Cities and Schools Forum. …
The Auburn Mountainview High School Marching Band/Color Guard recently took third place in division “A” at the Peninsula Classic. Drum major Samantha Fix and color guard captains Adrienne Dunham and Lindsay Belden led the competition. …
The school district board of directors recognized Jennifer Poteet, certificated support specialist and auditor, for her outstanding service. “Jennifer is a very hardworking individual,” said Debbie Leighton, executive director of human resources. “I appreciate all she has brought to the school district and to the human resources team. Often I have comments from our new hires about how pleased they were to work with Jennifer throughout the hiring process.” Poteet’s experiences in schools, courts and even a district attorney’s office have prepared her for her role in the school district. Yet she continues to learn new things and extend her education. Recently she graduated from the three-year Human Resources Educational Leadership Program (HELP) with a schools human resources professional certification. …
The board of directors recognized Elizabeth Mondragon, a fifth-grader at Pioneer Elementary School, for being an outstanding student. … The board also presented the Gold Star Volunteer Award to Macaria Velasquez-Chavez, in recognition of her volunteer support to the school district. She volunteers daily in Carla Carrizosa’s kindergarten classroom at Gildo Rey Elementary. In addition, Velasquez-Chavez directs school traffic once a week. …
Tessa Goodwin, a senior at Auburn Riverside High School, performed with the Auburn Symphony on Oct. 10-11. Goodwin plays the cello.
