Auburn’s three high schools (Auburn, Auburn Mountainview and Auburn Riverside) along with community volunteers from State Farm Insurance came together at the Les Gove sand bag site Monday for a friendly competition of sandbag filling and wall building.
Supervised by the Army Corps of Engineers, the three teams were given 10 minutes to fill sandbags and build a sandbag wall. The winner, Auburn Mountainview, was deemed to have built the best wall at the end of the competition by the Army Corps.
After the competition, the kids helped volunteers from State Farm Insurance fill more bags that were then delivered to two Auburn residents who had requested assistance to get sandbags at their homes.
In all, it is estimated the high school students and State Farm volunteers were able to fill approximately 800 sandbags in less than an hour.
Sandbags will be available to the public at the Les Gove sand bag site throughout the week.
“We were happy to make the delivery to the residents,” said State Farm’s Nancy Carpenter. “The elderly woman we were able to help was very appreciative of our efforts.” Carpenter was able to rally 15 local agents as volunteers for the event.
