Terry Home Inc. celebrates the groundbreaking of its second facility with a 3 p.m. ceremony Sept. 29 at 727 A St. NE, Auburn.
The public is invited. Community leaders are expected to attend, including Mayor Pete Lewis, the King County Housing Authority, the Housing Trust Fund and the TBI Council/Housing Trust Fund.
Terry Home Inc., a nonprofit organization, was established to provide long-term care and shelter for young adults (18-45) who have suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI).
The organization began with a local mother’s dream to find a home for her son, then 18-year-old Terry, who had survived a TBI in 1984. There were no homes for young TBI survivors other than geriatric nursing homes. But after 10 years of fundraising, grant writing and tears, Terry Home was built and opened in Pacific in 1996.
The Pacific facility is home to 10 young adult TBI survivors. It is a place where residents can continue to work toward a more independent lifestyle.
To meet the growing need to care for TBI survivors, a second facility is opening. It will become home to 12 young survivors. Four of the rooms will be set aside for returning veterans.
Most of the funding for the construction of the Auburn facility is being received through grants. However, Terry Home continues to raise funds to cover the remaining $100,000 in expenses needed to complete the project.
Terry Home is hosting a Building More Hope Dinner and Auction at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 22 at Emerald Downs. Tickets are $50 before Oct. 7 and $60 after.
